Loranda Ernano Loranda “Peggy” Ernano, 89, of Brookfield, wife of the late Vincent Ernano, Sr., died peacefully at Candlewood Valley Nursing Home on May 6, 2014 four years to the day after her husband died, surrounded by the Angels who had lovingly taken care of her for the last five years. She was born on September 5,1924 in New York City, daughter of the late Ramon and Adeline Cerda. For 20 years until her retirement Peggy was a secretary at Fordham University. Peggy was a longtime parishioner of St. Joseph’s Church in Brookfield, where she was an active volunteer. Her greatest joy came from helping others whether it be embroidering Christening bibs or crocheting prayer shawls for the sick. She was always admired for her strength and grace. She will be greatly missed by her four children, Joseph Ernano and his wife Sandra of NY; Vincent Ernano, Jr. of CA; Virginia Ernano of VA; Diane Lalli and her husband Peter of New Milford; three sisters; Ramona Craccolici, Gloria Massimo, Lillian Garafalo; seven cherished grandchildren Michael, Gregory, Bianca, Samantha and Ruby Ernano, Andrew and Matthew Lalli; five treasured great grandchildren Amanda, Colin, Kayla, Frank, and Charles.

Sergio Roman, Jr., 70, of Waterbury, son of the late Sergio and Teresa (Rosado) Roman, died on Tuesday, May 6, 2014 at Hartford Hospital. He was born on October 6, 1943 in San Sebastian, P.R. Sergio worked for the State of Connecticut for 20 years. He was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Waterbury. Sergio will be greatly missed by his six children Audrey Roman, Katherine Sanchez, Liza Roman, Teddy Roman, Justin Roman, Steven Roman; his sister Carmen Pages and her husband Mario. He is predeceased by his brother Michael; twelve cherished grandchildren; one treasured great grandchild and many nieces and nephews.

Richard F. Hess – February 09, 1934 – May 12, 2014

Richard F. Hess, 80, of New Milford, beloved husband of 50 years to the late Elizabeth (Morgan) Hess, died peacefully on Monday, May 12th. He was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 9, 1934, son of the late William and Jean Hess. He was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Lakes in New Milford and was a past parishioner of St. Joseph Church, Brookfield. He was a Veteran of the Korean War, proudly serving with the United States Marine Corp. Mr. Hess worked for many years as an engineer for Perkin Elmer and was involved in projects including the Hubbell Telescope and the Apollo Lunar programs. Outside of his love for his family, he had two passions, sports and singing. He played minor league baseball for the Brooklyn Dodgers, was a founder and past president of the Brookfield Baseball Association, and built the Grey’s Bridge Baseball Field. Continuing his involvement in sports, he coached hockey, baseball and refereed football and hockey. He was a passionate singer for many years at St. Joseph Church Minstrels, Our Lady of the Lakes Choir and the Danbury Notables. He will be sadly missed by his nine children, Carole Hess, Richard Hess (Bernadette), Mary Hess, Janette McKeown (Shawn), Barbara Hess, James Hess (Linda), Patricia Kelleher (Thomas), Steven Hess (Julie) and Kenneth Hess; twelve beloved grandchildren, Theresa, Gregg, Richard, Alana, Patrick, Matthew, Alex, Megan, Alison, Shannon, Amanda and Kaitlyn. He is also survived by his brothers, Charles (Elizabeth), and Lawrence; his sisters, Leona, Charlotte (Thomas), Lorraine (Bill), and Joyce (Thomas); as well as many nieces and nephews. Richard is predeceased by his cherished daughter Theresa Hess.

Carol Ruth Bassett, 69, of Benson, NC, formerly of Danbury, wife of the late Lee Randall Bassett, died on Saturday, May 17th in North Carolina. She was born on January 13, 1945, one of thirteen children born to the late William and Ruth (Mosher) Meade of Danbury. She was a graduate of Danbury High School and was a past member of the New Life Methodist Church in New Fairfield. Over the years, Carol worked for several area companies, including American Tile, Branson Ultrasonic and Filenes. Carol enjoyed the NY Yankees, playing cards and Dominoes. Most importantly, Carol’s life was centered around her faith and her family. She was a devoted mother who put her children’s needs before her own. Her happiest times were spent with her children and grandchildren. Carol will be sadly missed by her beloved children, Pastor Michael Bassett and his wife Donna, of Benson NC; daughter Stacey Carroccio and her husband Christian (DPD) of New Milford; six cherished grandchildren Isaac, Abigail, Caleb, and Lydia Bassett, Alexandra and Cameron Carroccio; her two brothers Keith and Duanne Meade; five sisters Colleen Morris, Korrine Schaper, Janice Webb, and Janet Geeslin, Terri Buttery; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Rose Marie (Jurss) Dombroski, of Newtown, died peacefully on Saturday, May 17th at Maplewood of Newtown. She was born in Milwaukee, WI on July 3, 1927, daughter of the late Edward and Rose (Springob) Jurss. In 1949, she graduated from Marquette University with a bachelor in Philosophy and a minor in Secondary Education. Upon graduating from college, Rose went on to work as a social worker for the Department of Public Welfare in Cooke County, IL. After moving to Ridgefield, CT in 1963, she worked as a teacher at Pinchbeck’s Nursery School. She then devoted herself to caring for her children and was a stay at home mom. Rose enjoyed traveling, skiing and playing bridge. Later on, she was an administrative assistant at Emery Air Freight and then worked at the Congregational Church in New Canaan. In 1987, Rose Marie moved to Brookfield and became secretary for the Brookfield Senior Center. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister. She was a past parishioner of St. Mary’s Church in Ridgefield. She will be sadly missed by her son, Paul Dombroski and his wife, Elizabeth of Shelton; her two daughters, MaryBeth Knight and her husband, David of Brookfield, Lynne Dombroski and her husband, Mark Wilson of Wellesley, MA; her two grandchildren, Diana Smith and her husband, Jason of Bethel, and Amanda Gaita and her fiancé Jennifer Gross of Lake Worth, Fl; and her two great grandchildren, McKenah and Gavin Smith. She is also survived by her brother, Kenneth Jurss and his wife, Mary Lou; as well as several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Lillian (Grimard) Yergeau, 98, passed away at her home in Brookfield on Thursday, May 8, 2014. She was the widow of the late Jean C. Yergeau. Lillian was born in Manchester, NH on December 1, 1915, daughter of the late Joseph F. and Angelina Grimard. She was a graduate of Keene High School, Keene, N.H. Lillian worked in the Brookfield public school system as a tutor at Huckleberry Hill School for ten years.She assisted the reading specialists with numerous clerical duties. She was a walking history text and loved telling children about people from the past because she had lived during their lives.When fourth graders read, Helen Keller’s Teacher,she helped Helen Keller come alive for them because she had listened to her talk many times on the radio and recounted many interesting details. Lillian was an accomplished clarinetist. Her clarinet teacher played and marched in the band of John Philip Sousa, the famous March King. Prior to World War II, Lillian, her sister Doris, her brother Ernest and youngest brother George were asked to form a clarinet quartet for the well-known Selma Clarinet Company in Elkart, Indiana. They formed the family quartet and were pictured in many magazine advertisements for that type of clarinet. Their group performed all over the New England area.When city bands were popular in the 30’s, Lillian was the first girl to perform with her brothers in the Montpelier, Vt. Boys Band. The conductor at the time felt that he could not break up the quartet, ordered her a special uniform with a skirt and asked the boys to watch their boys’ language. At the end of World War II, Lillian marched with the band in the celebration parade in New York City. She also always played in the Barre, Vermont City Band.She was one of two clarinetist in the Vermont Symphony and the Vermont Philharmonic. As a young woman she also gave clarinet lessons to many children in the Barre and Montpelier,Vt. area. Her parents and she started a dry cleaning business in the 1950’s. Lillian worked there until the business closed in 1970, In 1978, she moved to Brookfield, Ct. to live with her daughter and family. Lillian leaves behind her daughter, Mary Ann and her husband Michael Iamartino of Brookfield; a sister-in-law, Margaret Grimard of Windsor,Vt.; five grandsons, Joseph and his wife Valentine, Gregory and his wife Rene, Daniel and his wife Sandra, Matthew and his wife Anne, and Jonathan. She is survived by nine great-grandchildren Alindy, Erin, Christian, Sean, Meagan, Marissa, Alexander, Spencer and Harrison. Lillian is survived by five nieces and four nephews and many great nieces and nephews.She was predeceased by three sisters Rose Blanar, Mildred Irene Grimard, Doris Partridge and two brothers, Joseph E. and George A. Grimard.

Ralph E. Gustafson – September 23, 1931 – January 25, 2014

Ralph E. Gustafson went to his eternal rest on January 25, 2014 after a long illness. His passing was witnessed by his daughter Susan as he crossed the Bridge to Heaven at Hospice of Branford CT. Ralph, the youngest child born to Ernest & Susanna (Deubel) Gustafson, born September 23 1931, attended Danbury schools, graduated from Danbury High in 1950. He was proud to be a part of the protest that kept Danbury Fair Day alive for future generations until the Fair closed in 1981. After he graduated from high school, Ralph joined the Air Force serving his country in Thule, Greenland as a Master Sergeant during the Korean Conflict. He enrolled into University of Connecticut upon discharge from the Air Force to study engineering. He married his wife Evelyn Stec in 1954, became a father in 1955 with the birth of his daughter, Susan. His career spanned automotive repair to production manager for an electronic scale company. He worked for Berkshire Motors, Data Control Systems, and CompuWeigh. Ralph will be remembered as a man who would always lend a hand if someone needed to build a deck, install a swimming pool, fix a car or any home repair project, His meticulous work was appreciated by all. Fondly referred to as ‘’ Uncle Euell’’ he loved the outdoors imparting tidbits on edible vegetation on hikes. He was an avid gardener, enjoying and sharing the harvest with friends, neighbors and family. He is predeceased by his wife, Evelyn (Stec) Gustafson and his son Jeffrey R. Gustafson, his parents Ernest & Susanna, His sisters, Evelyn Schrade & Anne Parzuchowski. Besides his daughter, Susan Gustafson. He is survived by his daughter-in-law Molly Sim, grandchildren Lauren Elizabeth Sim Gustafson and Colby Gustafson of Alexandria, VA. His brother, Ernest P. Gustafson, Jr., nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

Cynthia Ann Plummer, 66, of Brookfield, daughter of the late Raymond and Shirley (Valoir) Specht, died at Danbury Hospital, on May 15, 2014. She was born on June 19, 1948 in Grand Rapids, MN. Cynthia was an active member of the Mountain Church of God in Brookfield. She was a talented acoustic guitarist; she shared her faith as a singer and song writer. Cynthia enjoyed arts & crafts and outdoor gardening. Cynthia will be sadly missed by her two beloved sons, Stephen Plummer, Jr of FL, Thomas Plummer of Brookfield, 2 cherished grandsons, Stephen III, Alson; her brother David Specht, and her sister Connie (Specht) Bird. She is predeceased by her son Joseph Christopher, and her sister Patricia Davis.

Kevin Michael Mateer, 49, of New Milford, beloved husband of Roberta “Berta” (Kennedy) Mateer, died on Tuesday, May 27th. He was born in Danbury on May 25, 1965, cherished son of Kenneth and Meredith (Barton) Mateer of Kent. Kevin graduated from Brookfield High School, Class of 1983. He was a self employed Master Carpenter and subcontractor for Arnold Karp Assoc. He was a talented woodworker and artist. He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, hiking and camping. His vegetable garden was his passion. A loving family man, his wife and sons were the center of his life. He was a proud supporter of his boys’ athletic activities, especially New Milford Bulls Pop Warner Football. In addition to his cherished wife of 20 years, Berta, and his parents, Kenneth and Meredith; he will be sadly missed by his sons Duncan and Sean Mateer; his sister Tracey Lee Mateer; brother Korey Scott Mateer; his mother-in-law June Kennedy; his in-laws Laura (Bob), Kevin (Nancy), Theresa; extended family members, Emma Pavoa, and Uncle Jackie. Suzanne B. Antonacci, 81, of New Fairfield, entered into eternal rest at Danbury Hospital on Sunday, June 1, 2014. She was born in Mount Vernon, New York on December 25, 1932, daughter of the late Louis J. and Anna Marie (Versace) Antonacci. She was a graduate of Edison High School in Mount Vernon, NY and was a member of their alumni association. Suzanne was a loving mother who devoted herself to her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed working as a secretary in New York. Suzanne later owned and operated the Hollowbrook Coffee Shop in Putnam Valley, NY for many years. She enjoyed membership in the Red Hat Society in both Westchester and New Fairfield and attended the New Fairfield Senior Center. Suzanne will forever be remembered for her warmth, her graciousness, her wit, and her continual love of people and celebrations. She will be sadly missed by her son, Louis N. Luongo and his wife, Sheryl of Putnam Valley, NY; her daughter, Gina (Luongo) O’Connell and her husband, John of New Fairfield; her five grandchildren, Keri Dunn and her husband, Kieran, Amanda Ellrodt, Mark Badi, LouAnna and Nicholas O’Connell; her brother, Louis F. Joseph A. Matturro, Sr, 79, of Danbury passed away peacefully on Monday, June 2, 2014 at Danbury Hospital with family at his side. Joseph was born on September 5, 1934 in Port Chester, NY to Andrew and Vera Matturro. He is pre-deceased by his brother William. Joseph went to Port Chester High School. He joined the Marines 1956-1960. He worked at Andy’s Mowers with his Father and also at Mofar for many years. Joseph is survived by his wife, jean of 52 years. A daughter, Gina and her husband Robert Beeman. Sons, Joseph and his wife Robin; Andrew and his wife Lisa. He will be sadly missed by his 9 grandchildren.

Life-long Danbury resident Lester F. Miller, 79, died peacefully June 4, 2014. Lester was born August 16, 1934. He was predeceaced by his parents, Lester F. miller Sr, Katherine (Hansson) Miller and five siblings, Beatrice Miller, William Miller, Barbara Cher, Donald Miller and Karen Moreno. Lester graduated from graduated from Danbury High in 1953. He went on to Hartford Technical College and earned degrees in both electrical and mechanical engineering. He married A. Elizabeth “Liz” Macauley in 1957 in Danbury. In retirement Lester enjoyed watching his beloved Red Sox, spending time with his children and grandchildren, as well as working on Lee Farm in Danbury. Lester was a respected member of the Masons for over 50 years, and a devout member of the United Methodist Church congregation, where he served as lay leader in the 1970s. He is survived by his wife Liz; brother Richard; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Jerry Rutledge; son Lester Miller III; son and daughter-in-law Brian and Bridgette Miller; grandchildren Jessica, Justin and Jonathan Rutledge, and Sarah and Rachel Miller.

Mr. Dennis Martin Eliason, 72, of Brookfield passed away on Saturday, June 7, 2014 at Danbury Hospital. He was the husband of Marilyn (Lyle) Eliason of 48 years. Dennis was born on March 18, 1942 in Mt. Vernon, NY, son of the late Harold Martin and Elsie (Carlson) Eliason. He was a graduate of Stamford High School and a graduate of UCONN School of Pharmacy. He enjoyed local baseball games and was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox. His favorite things included walking on the beach, picking out his favorite restaurants, taking in musical theatre and movies. Dennis was also a member of the Danbury Men’s Club. Besides his wife Marilyn, he leaves behind a son, Thomas Martin Eliason of Danbury; a daughter, Jill and her husband Dave Potter of Brookfield; a sister-in-law Patricia and her husband Anthony Adonetti of Greenwich; and “The Cousins”. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

Rita M. Westphal, 89, formerly of Brookfield, beloved wife of the late Sylvester Westphal, died peacefully on Saturday, June 7 in the presence of family. Margherita Carlino was born in Brooklyn, NY on May 11, 1925, daughter of the late Jasper Carlino and Giovanna Maria (DiSanti) Carlino . Mrs. Westphal was a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose in Brooklyn, NY , where she attained the position of Senior Regent . In addition she was also an active member of the Grandmother’s Club and the Tuesday club. At the age of 85 still maintaining her enthusiasm for new experiences she joined the Brookfield YMCA where she enjoyed swimming and other exercise programs . Playing Pokeno on Tuesdays with her friends at the Rolling Wood Club House in Brookfield was another favored activity. An avid shirt and dressmaker, she was happy to share her talent with her family and loved ones. She will be sadly missed by her two daughters, Laura and her husband, Dr. Paul Ruggiero of Redding, Linda and her husband, Steven Feldstein of Weston; her six grandchildren, Christian Ruggiero and his wife, Emily, Dr. Jason Ruggiero and his wife, Caroline, Richard Ruggiero and his wife, Olga and Leah, Sarah and Rachel Feldstein. She is also survived by one great grandson, Wiley Ruggiero. Rita will forever be remembered for her warmth, her graciousness and her generosity.

He was born on September 17, 1963, in Danbury, son of Betty Faynor Shepherd and the late Leonard Durkin. Paul graduated from Brookfield High School, class of 1980. He worked for Perkin Elmer and O&G. Paul loved being outdoors, hunting and fishing. He enjoyed cooking and watching NASCAR. Paul was a member of the Sokol Club in Brookfield. He is survived by his mother Betty Faynor Shepherd of VT, his four sons Paul C. Webb, Jr. Elden was a professional truck driver for Coca-Cola who enjoyed working on cars, computers and stereos. He was a a great son, father and brother who will be in our hearts forever. Angelo Leone, Jr., of New Milford, died on Wednesday, June 11th. He was born in the Bronx, NY on August 2, 1971, son of Rose Marie (Hall) Leone and the late Angelo Leone, Sr. Angelo was an avid fisherman and hunter. He was a member of The Bass Masters and Ducks Unlimited. He enjoyed making his own fishing lures. He was happiest when spending time with his daughter and sharing his love of fishing. He will be sadly missed by his mother, Rose Marie; his wife, Marie Leone; his cherished daughter, Tori Rose Leone; his brother, Nick Leone; and his grandmother, Rosa Leone. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
