Diane Marie Smigala, 60, of Southbury, daughter of the late Carl G. and Mary R. (Reilly) Smigala, died on April 2, 2014 at the Lutheran Home of Southbury, where she lived for many years. Diane was born on January 14, 1954 in Danbury. She graduated from Danbury High School in 1974. Diane worked at Friendly’s and as a health aide. She was very involved in Special Olympics swim team and Equestrian. Diane enjoyed Camp Calumet in New Hampshire for a week each summer. She was a member of the Toastmasters. Diane was always a happy and willing helper. Diane is survived by her brother in law Ken Spotted, nephew Clay Spotted both of Montana, one aunt and several cousins.

Anthony Schiavo, 84, of Bethel, cherished husband of Dolores (Guido) Schiavo, passed away peacefully at his home on Saturday, April 5th in the presence of his family. He was born in New York, NY on March 18, 1930, son of the late Vincenzo and Felicia (Sansone) Schiavo. Tony was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He was happiest spending time with his loved ones and will be sadly missed. In addition to his beloved wife of 60 years, Dolores, he is survived by his loving daughter, Irene Schiavo employed by the Bethel Board of Education; his three cherished grandsons, George DiGrandi, Joseph DiGrandi and his wife, Amanda, and Michael DiGrandi; his sister, Tessie Etter; and brother, Michael Schiavo and his wife, Filomena. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his three brothers, Louis, James and Joseph.

Bruce Tolle, 52, of Brookfield, beloved husband of Kim Tolle, peacefully passed away on Saturday, April 5th. He was born in Annapolis, MD on February 19, 1962. He was a graduate of Baylor University and received his Masters Degree from Sacred Heart University. In addition to his wife of 26 years, Kim, he will be sadly missed by his two sons, Blaine and Kyle Tolle. In addition, he is survived by his parents, Berry and Linda Tolle of Fairview, Texas; brothers, John and Marshal Tolle; his sister, Nancy Ritchie and her husband, Kevin; mother and father-in-law, Ron and Jimmie Hicks; brother in-law, Barry Hicks and wife Patty. He is also survived by ten nieces and nephews. Bruce was happiest when he was supporting his boys during their sporting events. Whether it was the side of the swimming pool, soccer field, lacrosse field, or hockey rink, Bruce was there with cheers of motivation and encouragement. He personally enjoyed participating in triathlon events, indoor cycling at the Y, camping with family and friends, a variety of music, a fun game of cards, and grilling a great meal on the deck.

Rose Guarino, 87, a longtime resident of Danbury, died in Danbury Hospital, Wednesday, April 9. She was born in New York City, to her parents, Maria (Guiliano) and Joseph Sapienza. They moved to Danbury when Rose was a child, where she graduated from St. Peter’s School and Danbury High School. She began her married life with her husband Charles Guarino in Brooklyn, NY. They returned to Danbury to raise their children. Rose’s Husband, her two brothers, Salvatore and Joseph Sapienza, and her nephew Steven predeceased her. She is survived by her three children, Amy Guarino Dent of Sandy Hook, Marie Guarino Moore of New Fairfield, and Alan Guarino of Marlboro, NY. She was well loved by her sons-in-law, Geoffrey Dent and Glenn Moore and her daughter-in –law, Kathy Glynn Guarino. Everyone who knew Rose loved her, especially her six grandchildren: Marissa Dent of New York City; Christina Dent of Milford, CT; Allegra Guarino of Seattle, WA; Meredith Moore of Sumter, SC; Christofer Guarino of New York City; and Rachael Moore of Bristol, England. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law Joanne Sapienza and Vina Guarino and her brother – in-law, Ralph Guarino and six loving nieces and nephews and their families, and her devoted friend and loving caregiver Sandra Ward. Her immediate and extended family was the focus of her life; her home the place for everyone to gather. Rose was admired as a gifted coordinator; able to bring people together for worthy causes. She made Danbury a better place to live through her work, community service, and service to her church. She will be remembered for her many years of service as the bookkeeper for the Danbury Public Schools Lunch Program and as a secretary at Broadview Junior High School. As a mom, she was PTA president and Campfire Girl Troop Leader at Hayestown School. She was a devoted parishioner of St. Gregory’s Church and served on committees there. Rose was also a mentor in the DSABC Mentorship Program, a volunteer at Danbury Hospital for many years, as well as other volunteer programs within Danbury. As a member of a local chapter of the AARP, she held several titles including president. Rose leaves a void that can’t be filled.

Thomas George Cooper, 63, of New Milford, beloved husband of Cynthia (Caram) Cooper, died April 10, 2014 at New Milford Hospital. He was born in Toledo, OH on December 29, 1950, son of the late George L. and Alice (Roebling) Cooper. Thomas served in the U.S. Navy. He was a Sr. Electrical Engineer for General Data Comm. for 29 yrs. Thomas was a member of The Odd Fellows Lodge, New Milford Chapter. He restored vintage radios and was an avid collector of coins and stamps. Thomas loved antiques. He was well loved and will be sadly missed by his wife Cindy of 20 years; two sons Thomas H. Cooper and his wife Jennifer of Norfolk, VA, Dylan J. Cooper and his wife Pamela of Luxemburg, WI; stepson Nathan L. Andrews of New Milford, stepdaughter Laura J. Andrews of San Diego, CA; five grandchildren Thomas, Aidan, Brady, Drake, and Daphne Cooper; sister Cherie Pitchard and her husband David; nephew Timothy Pitchard and his wife Megan.

She was born on October 2, 1928 in New Foundland, Canada. She was a Mailroom Clerk, employed by Danbury Printing and Litho. Dorothy was an active member of AARP. She will be sadly missed by her children Linda Richard and her husband Dan of Danbury; Robert Palmer of New Milford; Debra Pieplow and her husband Timothy of New York; Joseph Palmer of New town; four grandchildren Katie, Jennifer, Blake and Brett Palmer; sister Allie Marsh; brother Harold Hancock and many nieces and nephews. Paul Murphy – December 07, 1945 – March 27, 2014

Paul A. Murphy Esq. age 68, formally of Ridgefield, entered into eternal rest on March 27, 2014 after a short illness in Arcadia, FL. He was born on December 7, 1945 in Brooklyn, NY to William and Mary (Buonaiuto) Murphy. Paul was a military policeman in the United States Air Force from 1962 to 1967 and was honorably discharged. His first career was with the NYPD assigned to the 6th Precinct. He retired from the NYPD anti-crime division in 1985 and embarked on his second career as a private real estate attorney in Bayside, NY. He retired from his practice in 2002. Paul was an active Roman Catholic who enjoyed attending daily Mass in both NY and FL. He cherished spending time with his wife, children, grandchildren and close friends. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and outdoorsman who especially enjoyed relaxing at his mountain house in upstate NY. In the last months of his life, Paul was lovingly cared for by the Arcadia Hospice House. His family is eternally grateful for gold standard care he received as well as the compassion and love given to him by the nurses and staff. Paul is survived by his wife Caroline; his son Paul and wife Cathy; daughters Meghan Kinoshita and husband Michael, and Taryn; stepsons Patrick Dennehy and wife Christine, Brian Dennehy and fiancé Amanda; sisters Patricia & Mary Ellen; brother William; nine grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and his childhood friend William McKeen. He was pre-deceased by his father, mother and a nephew.

Jolanta held a PHD in Economics and was a Professor at Trident University International for 8 years. She had a love for swimming. Jolanta, also had a great appreciation and love for animals. Elinor Rose Wemitt, 93, formerly of Beaver Brook Road, Danbury, beloved wife of the late Paul J. Wemitt, died peacefully at Candlewood Valley Healthcare in New Milford on Saturday, April 19th. She was born in West Newton, MA on November 16, 1920, daughter of the late Domenic and Rose (Germinaro) Caruso. She was a parishioner of St. Joseph Church, Danbury and longtime member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Beaver Brook Fire Company. Mrs. Wemitt was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her happiest times were spent with her family. She was a talented cook, and loved flower gardening. She also enjoyed doing ceramics, and in her younger years bowling with her sisters. She will be sadly missed by her two daughters, Joan Godfrey and her husband, George of Bridgewater, and Paula Wemitt of New Milford; her two grandchildren, William Godfrey and his wife, Melanie of Sandy Hook, and Kimberly Timan and her husband, Thomas of New Milford; her five great grandchildren, Meghan and Tyler Timan, Jack, Andrew and Kyle Godfrey; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her two brothers, Francis and Emanuel; and her four sisters, Mary, Frances, Pauline and Rose.

Carol Jane McGee, 76, of Danbury, died Thursday, April 17, 2014 at The Gardens, Danbury. She was born on January 23, 1938 in Mount Vernon, NY, daughter of the late Louis and Marion (Welsh) Furio. Carol spent her earlier years in Brewster, NY where she attended school until she meet Jimmy, the love of her life. After their marriage in 1960, she lived in Danbury raising her family. Carol enjoyed her summer vacations with her family at the beaches of Cape cod and Rhode Island. Carol who was the “Queen” of crossword puzzles, also enjoyed listening to her “Oldies but Goodies”. In 1987 Carol and Jim moved to Conway, SC, to enjoy their retirement years. Due to poor health, Carol returned to Danbury in 2012 and made her home at The Gardens, Danbury Assisted Living. Her infectious laugh was enjoyed by her many new friends she mad at The Gardens. Carol will be sadly missed by her two sons James McGee Jr. of Waterbury, Jeffrey McGee and his wife Linda of Coral Springs, FL, and many Brother and Sister-in-Laws, nieces and nephews. Carol was predeceased by her husband, James L. McGee. The family of Carol McGee would like to thank the nurses, Tammy and Diane and the staff of The Gardens for all their kindness and care.

Maureen Ann Cleary, 80, of New Fairfield, died at Pope John Paul Nursing Home, Danbury, on Monday, April 14, 2014. She was born on February 19, 1934 in Bronx, NY, daughter of the late Maurice and Elizabeth (Brenner) Cleary. Maureen attended St. Raymonds Grammar School and graduated from Msgr. Preston Memorial High School in 1952. She worked for AXA Equitable Insurance Co. for 34 years as a Claims analyst, auditor before she retired in 1982. She was an active parishioner at St. Edward the Confessor Church. Maureen enjoyed teaching jewelry making, India ink sketching and acrylic painting at the New Fairfield Senior Center. Maureen will be sadly missed her by many cousins, Vinnie Grove, Mary Ellen Donovan, Austin McCann, Susan McCann, Cathy Sourk, Kate Kiernan, Jim Carroll, Nancy Parker, Patti McCann. She was Harold Piser’s long time companion.

David R. Geisler, 68, of Southbury, beloved husband of Ann (Killiany) Geisler, went Home to be with his Lord and Savior on Saturday, April 19th at Waterbury Hospital. He was born in Lancaster, PA on November 28, 1945, son of the late W. Robert and Dorothy (Manby) Geisler. David was a teacher at Ridgefield High School for nearly 30 years. He also owned and operated the Health Hut in Bethel for several years. He was an active member of Faith Church in New Milford and was a past leader of the Singles Ministry at First Assembly of God Church. While living at the Villages in Florida, David was active in many outdoor activities. He also enjoyed gardening, spending time with family, friends and his dog, Splash. David was a loving and generous person. He gave freely of himself to others, often putting their needs above his own. In addition to his cherished wife of 26 years, Ann, he will be sadly missed by his brother, Thomas Geisler of N. Conway, NH; his Aunt Lois Landis and her husband, Thomas; his mother-in-law, Christine Killiany; and his brother-in-law, Joseph Killiany. He is also survived by many cousins.

Gloria (Bondaroff) Janofsky, 87, of Sandy Hook, beloved wife of the late Harry Janofsky, died peacefully on April 24, 2014 surrounded by her family. She was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 30, 1926. Gloria always looked forward to her Mah Jongg games along with knitting and especially making her commercials for Quality Gem. After all, she was the “Queen of Quality Gem”. She will be sadly missed by her three sons, Gerald Janofsky and his wife, Lorraine of Shelton, Dennis Janofsky and his wife Doris of Bethel, Robert Janofsky and his wife Michele of Brookfield; her six grand children, Jill Whitman and her husband Dave, Julie Janofsky, David Janofsky and his fiancé Lauren Trohalis, Kevin, Jeffrey and Nicholas Janofsky and two great grand children Lucy and Vicky Whitman.

Frank Scalzo, 86, of Danbury, beloved husband of Concetta (Fiore) Scalzo, died on May 1, 2014 in his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 7, 1928 in Casanove, DeCollatura, Italy to the late Angelo and Rosina (Bonacci) Scalzo. Frank was a devoted husband, a loving father who especially enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a maintenance mechanic, at National Can Corp. until his retirement. He loved gardening, playing cards, going to Amerigo Vespucci to hang out with friends, playing Bocci, and watching soccer. Frank was also known for his basket weaving and was interviewed by the Danbury New Times for his talent, which featured a picture of him with his many baskets. In addition to his cherished wife Concetta, he will be sadly missed by his six daughters, Rose Hurlbut and her husband Paul of Redding; Christine Mead and her husband David of Danbury; Rachel Miller and her husband George of Pensacola, FL; Teresa Scalzo and her partner Frank Wilcox of Danbury; Angela Weber and her husband Shawn of Sandy Hook; Franca Scalzo and her Fiancée William Guzman of Danbury; his sister-in-law Giannina Scalzo of Canada; his brother Gino Scalzo and his wife Maria of Italy; his four treasured grandchildren Gabrielle Mead, Sarah, Jesse and Josiah Miller; many nieces and nephews and his beloved cat Boxer, who never left his side. Frank is predeceased by his two brothers Interzino and Domenic Scalzo and sister Rachela Scalzo. A special thanks and appreciation to Maria, Candance, Christina, Shari, Allison, and to the volunteers at Danbury Regional Hospice for all of their love and care.
