Eileen F. Scalzo – December 23, 1923 – April 08, 2013

Eileen Frances Scalzo 89 Eileen Frances Scalzo, 89, gently moved into heaven on Monday April 8th, 2013 with her family standing by her side. She was born on December 23, 1923 and was a life-long resident of Danbury. During World War II, Eileen served proudly as an Air Raid Warden. She retired from the Danbury News Times after 25 years. Eileen was a significant part of her entire family’s existence, with whom all shared their lives, and memories. She was the closest thing to a true Saint that many in her family and friends have ever witnessed. Her grandnephew, Greg Grandieri acknowledged that, “She’s the only person I know to never once raise her voice, say a curse, nor wish bad on anyone, a true angel!” All of her family concur and feel the void her passing imparts. Many years ago she was predeceased by her loving husband Bernard “Benny” Scalzo. She leaves behind her wonderful son, Bernard “Bernie” Scalzo and her only sister, Doris Reagan. She will also be sadly missed by her many nieces and nephews and grand nieces and nephews.

Mary Ellen Lee – July 01, 1925 – April 10, 2013

Mary Ellen Lee, 87, of Danbury, wife of the late Hugh M. Lee died at home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, April 10th. She was born July 1, 1925 in Manistee, MI, daughter of the late O.J. and Lucille E. (Shons) Racine. Mary Ellen enjoyed needle work and sharing her talent with her family. At Christmas, Mary Ellen handmade her grandchildren’s Christmas tree skirts and for her great grandchildren she made their Christmas stockings. Mary Ellen was very devoted to her family. Mary Ellen will be missed by her daughter, Sherrie A. Pluff and her husband Thomas; 7 grandchildren, Chandelle Albert and her husband Danny, Claudine Stephens, Kevin Pluff, Carie Koehler and her husband Chris, Elesa Malo and her husband Jeff, Leslie and Christopher Lee as well as 8 great grandchildren, Taylor, Dylan, Greyson, Jack, Josalee, Justin, Jolie and Bennett. In addition to her husband, Hugh, Mary Ellen is predeceased by her son, Mark A. Lee and her daughter-in-law Patricia Lee.

Rose D. Hanna – July 02, 1925 – April 11, 2013

Rose D. Hanna, 87, of Danbury died at Pope John Paul Healthcare Center on Thursday, April 11th. She was born July 2, 1925 in New York, NY, daughter of the late Wilhelm and Emma (Svboda) Kafka. Rose will be missed by her children, Steven DeVaux and his wife Debbie of Danbury, John Hanna and his wife Debbie of NY and Barbara Ziola and her husband Mark of FL; 6 grandchildren, Mary Ellen DeVaux, Michelle (DeVaux) Arling, Steven Edward DeVaux, Jean-Paul DeVaux, Glen Ziola and Allysa Hanna as well as several nieces and nephews. Rose was predeceased by her first husband, Robert Edward DeVaux; her second husband, James Hanna as well as 5 sisters, Blanche, Mary, Emily, Betty and Janet. William K. Burger – May 17, 1932 – April 14, 2013

William Karl Burger, 80, loving husband of Hazel Schmitt Burger died at home on April 14th 2013. He will be missed by his son William Karl Burger Jr. and daughters Deborah Burger Gay and Gail Burger as well as his grandchildren Joshua Gay and Kara Burger. He was a member of Squantz Engine Company for over 50 years and one of the founders of the New Fairfield Sparklers Drum Corps. He was also a member of the Bicentennial Committee for New Fairfield.

Charles Donald Lane Jr. – October 12, 1945 – April 17, 2013

Charles D. Lane Jr. “Don”, 67, formerly of Danbury, died Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at St. Vincent’s Hospital, Bridgeport, CT. He was born on October 12, 1945 in Danbury and was a life long resident of Danbury. Don was the son of the late Charles Lane Sr. and his wife Josephine (Capalongo). Don founded and operated D&L Tractor Trailer School in Bridgeport, CT for several years. He most loved spending time with his grandchildren. He also had a passion for boating, motorcycling and dogs. He is survived by his children, Donny Lane of Andover, MA; Kevin Lane and his wife Laurie of New Milford, CT; Kelly Lane and his wife Anna of Brookfield, CT; Melissa Stokes and her husband Kevin of Naugatuck, CT; twelve grandchildren; Ashley, Jessica, Whitney, Nicole, Corbin, Mariah, Olivia, Danny, Kaitlyn, Lizzie, Julia and Kylie.

Mae E. Demo – August 11, 1925 – April 23, 2013

Mae E. Demo, wife of Julius Demo, lifetime resident of Danbury, died Tuesday, April 23rd after a feisty, courageous battle with cancer, which, although it took her life, could not prevent her from making wise-cracks until the very end. Mae was born August 11, 1925 in Buffalo, NY but spent her childhood on South Street in Danbury, around the corner from her father’s South End Market grocery store on Main Street. Mae attended Danbury schools and was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church at the time her death. She was the daughter of the late Najem Moses and Lamia Malkoun Moses. The youngest of nine children, she was predeceased by brothers; Thomas Asmer, Marshall Miller and Michael Moses; her sisters, Minnie Jowdy, Manira Rebeirro, Mabel Perrotti and Mary Abdella. Mae worked at Reeves Soundcraft Corp. in Bethel for many years. She was an avid reader who enjoyed playing cards, mahjong and trivial pursuit. In addition to her husband, Julius, Mae is survived by her stepdaughter Linda Hansen; her grandchildren; Tanya Bennett, Julie Bell, Jessica Hansen; her great grandchildren, Destiny and Dallas Bennett and Samuel Bell as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Marguerite R. Eschner – January 22, 1959 – April 23, 2013

Marguerite R. Eschner, 54, of New Fairfield and wife of William Eschner Jr., died on Tuesday, April 23rd at Yale New Haven Hospital. She was born January 22, 1959 in Hoboken, NJ, daughter of the late Frank and Mildred (Olson) Fusco. Marguerite enjoyed going to the Jersey Shore with her family. Her passion was working with children as a paraprofessional. She will be missed by all who knew her. In addition to her husband of 28 years, Bill, Marguerite will be missed by her children, William, Maddie and Anthony Eschner of New Fairfield; her sister Arlene Schwerkolt of Brewster, NY; 2 brothers as well as several nieces and nephews.

Jacob W. Kaeser – December 31, 1924 – April 23, 2013

Jacob William “Willy” Kaeser, 88, of New Fairfield, died on Tuesday, April 23rd at his home. He was born December 31, 1924 in Danbury, son of the late Frank William and Clara (Gerstenmaier) Kaeser. Willy graduated from Danbury High in 1942. He was a machinist and worked at Fabric Fire Hose in Sandy Hook, and Interlab, Inc. in Danbury. Willy was a devoted gardener and beekeeper who sold his produce at farmers markets in Bethel and Westport. He was an avid runner and skier for many years. Willy traveled to Alaska and Europe. Willy will be missed by his sisters; Janet L. Pesente of Danbury, Evelyn K. Joudy of New Fairfield and Jeanne Washburn and her husband Alan of Fort Collins, CO as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Frank C. Kaeser and 2 sisters, Christine C. Kaeser and Ruth G. Hawley.

Karen M. Lockyer, 71, of Middlebury, beloved wife of Douglas Lockyer, died at her home in the presence of her family, on Monday, April 22nd. She was born in Patchogue, NY on April 17, 1942, daughter of the late Arthur and Josephine (Tucker) Ross. Karen worked as a driver for Connecticut Limousine. She as a parishioner of St. John of the Cross in Middlebury. In addition to her husband, Douglas, she will be sadly missed by her three daughters, Gretchen Viglione, Karen Jamieson, and Nicole Lockyer; her grandchildren, Robert M. Peploe, Samantha Viglione, Jason and Peter Jamieson, and Brandon Young; and her great granddaughter, Brooke Lynn Peploe. She is also survived by her sister, Geraldine Slocum.

Rose Marie (Lazerano) Karnischky, 97, of Danbury, wife of the late Hans F. Karnischky died Thursday, April 25th at Danbury Hospital. She was born April 19, 1916 in Brooklyn, NY, daughter of the late Carlo and Vicenzina (Albano) Lazzarano. Rose worked alongside her husband of 55 years in their grocery store in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. Rose is survived by her only daughter, Linda Harbuck and her husband Larry of Danbury; her sister Yolanda Marotta of Brooklyn, NY, as well as several nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her brothers, Frank and Sal and sisters, Gloria and Eleanor.

Vasiliki Stavros, lovingly known as “Kiki,” age 74, beloved wife of Michael Stavros, passed away peacefully in the presence of her family on Wednesday, May 8th at Danbury Hospital. She was born in Megalopoli Arcadia Greece on January 13, 1939, daughter of the late Lambros and Anastasia (Georgis) Karambatsos. While living in Montreal, Canada she met her cherished husband of 54 years, Michael. The two worked together, owning and operating Michael’s Beauty Salon for 43 years in Danbury. Kiki was a longtime parishioner of Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. She was an active member who loved her church and volunteered as a 2nd Grade Sunday School Teacher for many years. In addition to her devoted husband, Michael, she will be sadly missed by her two daughters, Constance Tracey and her husband, Robert of Danbury, and Michelle Stavros-Keenan and her husband, James of Danbury; her three grandchildren, Michael Keenan, Reena Tracey, and Augustus Keenan; her two sisters, Toula Sotiropoulos of Florida, and Georgia Karambatsos of Danbury; her nephew, Peter Sotiropoulos and his wife, Lena; and her niece, Roula Profetto and her husband, Peter.

Donna M. Wildman – February 08, 1956 – May 24, 2013

Donna M. Wildman, 57, of Danbury, beloved wife of Trevor Wildman, died peacefully in her home surrounded by her loved ones on Friday, May 24th. She was born in Danbury on February 8, 1956, daughter of the late Martin and Marie (Negri) Coffey. Donna worked for 25 years in the Distribution Department at The Danbury Newstimes. She was an avid fan and friend of the Osmond family, who enjoyed their music and collected Marie Osmond dolls. She also enjoyed scrapbooking. Most importantly, Donna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend. She was happiest spending time with her loved ones, especially on their family trip to Disney World. In addition to her cherished husband of 39 years, she will be sadly missed by her two sons, Kenneth Wildman and his fiance, Amy Manka, and Jeffrey Wildman and his wife, Suzanne; her five grandchildren, Lazzara Manka, Jessica, Christian, Joseph, and Joshua Wildman. She is also survived by her brother, Martin Coffey and his wife, Virginia; her three sisters, Laurie Cruess and her husband, Michael, Karen Tomasini and her husband, Gary, and Glory Bennette and her husband, John; her in-laws, Albert and Gwen Wildman; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Thomas E. Underhill Sr. – October 21, 1926 – May 21, 2013

Thomas E. Underhill, 86, of Danbury, husband of the late Winifred (Fillow) Underhill passed away on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 at home. He was born on October 21, 1926 in Shaftsbury, VT., son of the late Frederick and Blanche (Barber) Underhill. Thomas enjoyed wood working and gardening. He worked for Marcus Dairy for over 30 years, and retired from a 25 year career at Viking Wire Co. He is survived by a son; Thomas Underhill Jr. of Ridgefield, a daughter; Sheila Ventura and her husband John of Danbury, three loving grandchildren; Christine Ventura of Danbury, Scott and Melissa Underhill of Austin, TX, a great granddaughter, Ava of Austin, TX. and several nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his brothers, Frederick and Robert Underhill and sisters, Nan Deuschle and Susan Briggs. Family extends their appreciation to the Hospice for the exceptional care they provided and a very special Thanks to Anita Adams for her loving and faithful care of Thomas.

William G. Arndt, 65, of Bethel, husband of 27 years to Anna (Hopkins) Arndt died Monday, May 20th at Danbury Hospital. He was born on August 11, 1947 in Danbury, son of the late George and Ann (Donato) Arndt. Bill was a barber and owned and operated Bill’s Haircutter’s in Ridgefield for 20 years. Prior to owning the barber shop he worked in various departments at Danbury Hospital. Bill enjoyed golf and he was very generous, kind and caring. He loved to help the under privileged. In addition to his wife, Anna, Bill will be missed by his brother, Richard Arndt and his wife Marilyn of NY; 3 nephews, Brian Arndt and his wife Christine of VA, Jason Arndt and his wife Nicole of NY and Richard Jameson of VA; his niece, Kim Marshall of Ridgefield; his mother-in-law, Joan Hopkins of Bethel; 2 sisters-in-law, Mercedes Needham of England and Sarah Genero of Bethel.

James W. Emmans Jr – July 06, 1961 – June 08, 2013

James W. Emmans, Jr., 51, of New Milford, devoted husband of Cherlyn (Bothner) Emmans, died peacefully at Danbury Hospital on Saturday, June 8th after a two year courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Danbury on July 6, 1961, son of the late James,Sr. and Jean (Hanley) Emmans. James had a great sense of humor, and was an avid sports fan, especially the Mets, Rangers, Jets and Red Sox. He enjoyed gardening, and loved listening to John Denver. Most importantly, James was a loving husband, father, brother and uncle. He will be sadly missed.
In addition to his cherished wife of 28 years, Cherlyn, is survived by his son, Justin Emmans of New Milford; his brother, Leonard R. Emmans and his wife, Anita of Danbury; his nephews, Daniel, Tyler and Lucas; and his niece, Callie.

Edward J. Fiddler – July 03, 1959 – June 07, 2013

Edward John Fiddler, 53, of Brookfield, devoted husband of 29 years to Terry (Scott) Fiddler died on Friday, June 7th at Danbury Hospital. He was born July 3, 1959 in Brooklyn, NY son of Captain R. E. Fiddler and the late Dora (Atamura) Fiddler.

Edward received his Bachelor’s Degree from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, NY in 1981 and received his Master’s Degree in Finance from Fairfield University in 1991. He served in the U.S. Naval Reserve during Operation Desert Storm and was awarded a Bronze Star. Edward was Senior Vice President at Marsh McLennan for 19 years. He was an active parishioner of St. Joseph Church in Brookfield.

In addition to his father and his wife of 29 years, he will be missed by his son, Timothy Fiddler; his sister, Maria Leukart and her husband Jay; 2 nieces, Sarah Kelly and her husband Brian and Ashley Leukart as well as 2 great nephews, Connor and Jack Kelly.

Eino J. Kiviniemi – May 24, 1942 – June 04, 2013

Eino Juhani Kiviniemi, 71, of Bethel, passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, June 4. He was born in Pyhajoki, Finland on May 24, 1942, son of the late Juho and Aili Kiviniemi.
In July of 1967, he emigrated to the United States where, soon after arriving, he met his beloved wife and best friend Hannele.
Eino worked for many years as a Master Carpenter Foreman in Fairfield County. He thoroughly enjoyed fishing, gardening, and spending every minute with his family and beloved nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Two additional grandchildren will soon be welcomed into this world, which Eino was extraordinarily excited about.
Eino, endearingly known as “Isi” and “Pappa”, is survived by his loving wife of 43 years Hannele; 6 daughters: Tina Olin, her husband Michael; Minna Kiviniemi; Elina Kiviniemi Cordon; Lisa Melendez, her husband Josue; Hanna Smigala and her husband Jeff; Eeva Koski, her husband Antti; 9 grandchildren; Michael Olin Jr., and his sister Ingrid Kiviniemi, her fiancé Walter Melendez; Matthew Eino Kiviniemi, Samuel, Jocelyn and Ryan Melendez; Sophia, Lily and Kaiya Koski; his great granddaughter, Olivia Melendez; 3 sisters, Vieno Oversti and Aino Viirret of Finland and Irja Oja, and her husband Thure of Brooklyn, CT as well as dozens of nieces and nephews in the US and Finland.

Gerard (Jerry) Carino – November 02, 1925 – June 30, 2013

Gerard (Jerry) Carino, 87, of Danbury, beloved husband of Rose (DeVito) Carino died peacefully at Laurel Ridge Nursing Home in Ridgefield on Sunday, June 30th. He was born in Port Chester, NY on November 2, 1925, son of the late Gerardo and Isabel Carino.

He enjoyed playing golf, bowling and watching his favorite teams, Mets and Giants, on TV.

In addition to his wife of almost 60 years, Rose, Jerry will be missed by his 3 children, Gerri Petruccelli and her husband Nino of Ridgefield, Marie Cholko and her husband Robert also of Ridgefield and Joseph Carino and his wife Lisa of Newtown. His 7 grandchildren, Nino Petruccelli, Jr., Dana Isenberg, Michael, Christopher and Kathryn Cholko, Kristen and Matthew Carino as well as 4 great grandchildren, Nathan, Hailey, Luca and Noah.
