Roger John Burke Roger Burke of Bethel died unexpectedly on April 1, 2013. He was born on October 16, 1953 in Norwalk, third son of Mary E. (Walsh) Burke of Clearwater, FL and the late William H. Burke. Roger moved to Bethel with his family in 1961 where he became active in St. Mary’s Church, serving as an altar boy for Monsignor Richard Scully. He played in various sports leagues where he distinguished himself as an athlete. In 1972 he graduated from Immaculate High School and received a scholarship to play basketball at Jacksonville University. In 1997 Immaculate High inducted Roger into their Sports Hall of Fame. In the 1980s Roger followed his parents to Florida and worked landscape, bar-tending, and valet at famous resorts like the Belleview Biltmore in Belleair and at The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach. Roger loved the beach and the Florida sunshine, but soon grew to miss his native Connecticut. He returned home to Danbury and started his own company, Raindancer, specializing in seamless custom gutters for the Fairfield region. While living in Danbury in the late 1990s, Roger took charge of his beloved brother Marty. The two brothers became an inseparable pair, recognized and well-loved by every waitress and bartender in Danbury and Bethel. Marty and Roger made any happy hour truly happy. Roger was devoted to his fam¬ily. He was a dedicated nephew to his bachelor Uncle Jim in his last years. He was the best-man for two of his brotherâs wed¬dings. In 2002 Roger moved back to Bethel into the familyâs house on Whitlock Avenue, with his brothers Marty and Eddie. In addition to these two broth¬ers, he is survived by his mother and brother Bob of Clearwater, his brothers Bill (Madeline), Tim (Judy), and Tom (Debbie) of Beth¬el, Brian and David (Heather) of Cape Cod, Ricky in Victoria, BC, and his sister Maryellen (Dennis Robinson) in Portsmouth, NH, along with sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, and numerous cousins and other relatives who will all miss him greatly. Roger loved to laugh, greatly enjoyed the com¬pany of others, and had excep¬tional skills at story telling. These are his greatest legacy.
